MAKE - QST NINE PATCH

MAKE
QST (Quarter Square Triangle) NINE PATCH

These were in a little pamphlet from Patchwork & Quilting Magazine.
In collaboration with Amy Butler.

3 Fabrics 9if mine)
Patterned - three 5.5" x 5.5" squares
Orange - three 5.5" x 5.5" squares
Blue - four 4.5" x 4.5" squares

First how to make a QST

Lay one orange square over patterned fabric
draw a line diagonal - right sides together
(sorry can barley see in my picture)

Sew 1/4 inch seams down either side of drawn line

Cut between the seams.

Before moving fabric cut again through opposite corners.

Press these open
from that one you will now have half sqaures (four)
Join these halfs together, press open
When you have make them all, you will have 6 finished QST.
You only need 5 of these for your block.
Trim your squares to 4.5" square, to match the blue squares

Lay out you 5 QST and 4 blue squares

first join into rows and press

Then join those rows together and press
Finished!!

MAKE - FLYING GEESE

MAKE - North, South East & West
Flying Geese

These were in a little pamphlet from Patchwork & Quilting Magazine.
In collaboration with Amy Butler.

5 Fabrics
8 pieces patterned fabric 6.5" x 3.5"
plain one - 4 pieces 3.5" x 3.5"
plain two - 4 pieces 3.5" x 3.5"
plain three - 4 pieces 3.5" x 3.5"
plain four - 4 pieces 3.5" x 3.5"

You will be making 8 flying geese units, two of each to pair up
see below

For one Flying Geese block, you'll need one rectangle 6.5" x 3.5" and two 3.5" squares.

Lay one square on one side of the light rectangle, RST (right sides together). Using a fine tipped marker, draw a line from corner to corner, then stitch on that line.

Trim off excess as shown, leaving 1/4" seam allowance.

Press the seam open.

Now place the second square on the opposite side of the rectangle, RST. Note the new square will slightly overlap the previous piece - that's okay! Mark your diagonal line and stitch on the line.
Trim again and press seam open.

Repeat this step for all 8 flying gesse
Before piecing these blocks together, trim off all the "tails" and "ears".

Piece the geese into their pairs, press seam open

Then sew the rows together, press seams open

Finished! trim
